The City of Humboldt has a bylaw that states residents are responsible for the maintenance of their property, adjacent boulevards, and the back alley adjoining their property. Maintenance includes trimming hedges, trees, shrubs, cutting grass, and removing weeds. Overhanging trees need to be trimmed up to 8 feet overhanging sidewalks and 14 feet overhanging back alleys.

For residents on corner lots, it is important to keep the intersection sight lines clear of visual obstruction from hedges or other plantings in the triangular area shown below. Anything planted or placed in this area cannot exceed one meter in height. Proper maintenance in the sight triangle allows for better safety for drivers and residents crossing the streets.
